Internship: Electrochemical metal recovery from water treatment processes
Publié il y a 24 jours
Emploi consulté
Description De L'emploi
The water treatment sector produces tons of waste containing high amounts of metals, which ends up being disposed of without valorised routes. Water boards are therefore looking for efficient waste management solutions by encouraging resource recovery. What if it was possible to reduce the metal consumption in this industry?
Electrowinning is a method used in industries to obtain valuable metals such as copper, aluminium, and zinc in their refined form. However, the complexity of the waste streams from the water treatment sector hinders the application of the electrochemical processes. Therefore, more studies need to be carried. Are you ready to help with this?
Your goal
The goal of this internship is to define the optimal conditions for the electrowinning process of metallic cations. The assignment will comprise both a literature review and laboratory experiments. The combination of both will allow you to discover the different electrochemical mechanisms that lead to metal removal/recovery from water treatment subproducts.
Based on the literature review and your laboratory experiments you will propose which operational conditions promote an efficient metal recovery. Finally, an estimation of the operational costs will be made based on the experimental data. This allows you to compare electrowinning to other technologies and define its feasibility.

Internship: Optimization of the Ceramic Microfiltration Process for Surface Water Treatment
Publié il y a 19 jours
Emploi consulté
Description De L'emploi
PWNT , part of Nijhuis Saur Industries (NSI) , offers an exciting internship position within the Research & Development team. During this internship, you will contribute to optimizing the ceramic microfiltration process for surface water treatment, with a special focus on improving pre-treatment operations.
With pioneering technologies such as ion exchange, ceramic membranes, and advanced oxidation, we develop sustainable water treatment solutions that are applied worldwide.
About the Internship
Ceramic microfiltration is one of PWNT’s key technologies for the production of high-quality drinking water. Pre-treatment plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficiency and reliability of the filtration step.
During your internship, you will investigate how different pre-treatment conditions influence the performance of ceramic membranes. You will design and monitor laboratory experiments, analyze the data, and propose optimizations that can be applied at water treatment facilities worldwide
* The location of the research (R&D center) is in Andijk, at the PWN water treatment facility. Perhaps once a week travel to Amsterdam (the main offices) can be arranged.
Your Tasks
- Conduct a literature review to support your experiments.
- Plan and organize laboratory activities in collaboration with your supervisor and operators.
- Perform jar tests and column tests for adsorption and desorption.
- Monitor experimental set-ups, collect data, and carry out detailed analyses.
- Report and present your results, including interpretations and recommendations
Who are you?
- Enrolled in a Dutch BSc or MSc Chemical engineering, Chemistry, Environmental sciencs or a related study.
- Passionate about R&D and water treatment, and motivated to work in a practical environment.
- Available for an internship for a minimal period of 6 months (up to 12 months).
- Pro-active and able to work autonomously
- Good communication skills, able to express his/her own opinion and not afraid to ask for help.
- Professional command of the English language in words and writing.
Working for us means
- A unique opportunity to gain experience at an innovative R&D centre in Andijk (the Netherlands).
- The chance to apply your academic knowledge in a real-life research environment.
- Close supervision from experienced researchers and process engineers.
- An internship allowance and reimbursement of work-related travel expenses.
