We are seeking a software engineer with a passion for building and validating resilient distributed systems. At Canonical you can build a career and drive the success of those leveraging Canonical's Ubuntu and Juju to build multi-cloud deployable cloud applications.
We see quality engineering as a first class engineering practice and are looking for people who can bring deep engineering insights and a data driven approach to test automation, reporting and data analytics.
The Distributed Systems testing team at Canonical is responsible for ensuring the high quality of Canonical's Cloud solutions based on Juju, Terraform, OpenStack, Kubernetes when deployed under highly diverse conditions, from bare metal in customer data centers to public clouds like AWS, GCE, Azure.
As a software engineer you will have the opportunity to develop CI pipelines which power Canonical's cloud integration testing and reporting. Upcoming initiatives you will have the opportunity to contribute to include expanding deployment capabilities to new clouds and developing AI/ML pipelines for automatic analysis of test results. A successful candidate is interested in tackling these problems, as well as imagining and leading new initiatives within the team and across Canonical.
Location: this is a Globally remote role
What your day will look like
- Create automated testing approaches and infrastructure for validating reliability, performance, and resilience of cloud orchestration tools and applications
- Enable engineering teams across Canonical to develop software with confidence by making distributed system testing tooling available across the company
- Enhance continuous integration pipelines for deploying and testing Canonical's cloud native products such as Kubeflow
- Deploy, manage, and debug highly distributed systems
- Monitor and report on automated testing efforts
- Collaborate daily with a globally distributed team
- Solid background in modern test processes and strategies
- Experience with Python or Go development
- Strong object oriented development skills
- Ability to develop and ship production grade modern web applications
- Working knowledge of continuous integration tools such as Jenkins, CircleCI, GitHub CI
- Knowledge of networking technologies and fundamentals
- Solid understanding of Linux system architecture
- A capacity for complex abstract thinking
- Capability for 2-4 weeks of international travel travel per year
- Collecting and analyzing large multidimensional datasets
- Operating data platforms: key-value stores, relational or document databases, event buses
- Work with cloud technologies such as OpenStack, Kubernetes, Terraform and AWS
- Developing AI/ML pipelines

What You'll Do :
- Design, build and maintain the infrastructure we need to support orders of magnitude more customers, while minimizing issues and controlling cost
- Investigate and fix issues or bottlenecks, whether it's deep in the platform code or in the client application
- Support the services and datastores that we own, 24x7
- Build tooling and automation to run our infrastructure with minimal human intervention

Who You Are :
- You have a BS / MS / PhD in a Computer Science, Engineering or related scientific field or at least 5 years of professional experience
- You have production experience with distributed systems, e.g. Zookeeper, Cassandra, Postgres, FoundationDB, Kafka, Elasticsearch, Redis, MongoDB
- You are mastering at least one programming or scripting language, e.g. Go, Java, Rust, C / C++
- You want to work in a fast, high-growth startup environment that respects its engineers and customers
- You can design simple and performant architecture to solve problems at high scale
- Bonus Point : You have hands-on engineering experience with at least one of the major cloud providers - AWS, Azure, GCP

Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the platform used by our AI and Data Science team to develop, evaluate, and run models predicting the properties of polymers.

Qualifications
- PhD or Engineering degree in Computer Science with knowledge in Machine Learning.
Skills

KBRW uses Elixir (backend) and React (frontend) languages for software development:

As part of a small project team, you will closely collaborate with a Lead Developer and a Project Manager to understand clients' needs and develop robust software solutions meeting their technical and business expectations
What will I be doing?- Learning the company's technical stack (Elixir and React) through an exciting and recognized one-month training!
- Supporting the Lead Developer and Project Manager in understanding and challenging client expectations regarding technical and business issues (daily meetings, scoping, Jira)
- Developing end-to-end features to meet client needs (designing new features, improving existing ones)
- Testing your code and conducting code reviews with the guidance of your Lead Developer before merging and launching the feature.Testing the feature with your team.
- Being proactive in analyzing, identifying, and continuously improving project quality (system integration,test, system distribution, real-time issues, etc.)
- Working daily with other KBs, such as product and engineering engineers, and UX/UI designers to develop and enhance existing features (user interface, performance, platform standards, etc.).
- Master's degree or equivalentin engineering or computer science
- Front-end experience (JS/CSS/Vanilla/HTML) and Back-end experience
- You are a team player with good communication skills (French and English)
- You want to thrive in an autonomous and client-focused environment

- Knowledge of Elixir is not mandatory: be ready to learn through our exciting and recognized one-month training

About The Job
Reporting to a Lead, you will be responsible to ensure we can reliably serve our products for users around the world. We expect you to have a strong background in development and system administration. Our systems evolve constantly and the tools needed to observe and act to ensure their resilience need to evolve accordingly.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of at least 1 programming language (Golang, Rust, Python preferably)
- Basic knowledge of linux administration and server administration
- Understanding of API and microservices concept
- Practical knowledge of git (and/or github/gitlab)

HPC is an important and technically challenging compute domain, with specialised tooling and a very high expectation of precision, efficiency and automation. This role is for a software engineer to join our HPC team to deliver an outstanding HPC experience - from bare metal to public cloud - as part of the broader Ubuntu platform. We are looking for a range of skills and experience, and will work on everything from the kernel to Debian packaging, but the heart of our effort will be Python software development for automation of key software in the HPC sphere. Our focus is on delivering a world class experience for the operation of the HPC cluster itself.
You will be part of the team that delivers charms that deploy and manage the HPC cluster and provide HPC software packages.
To succeed in this application you must be outstanding at maths and sciences, have built high quality software, have learned about open source ideally by working on it directly, and be looking for an engineering role with a company that makes mission-critical products for the global market. You should also be familiar with the open source environment, and want to build products in partnership with a community. Ideally, you should have some experience of high performance computing environments and a desire to unlock HPC for the world.
For this role you must have experience with Python. Experience in HPC environments is a strong advantage. Familiarity with HPC hardware and software is also a strong advantage - delivering great experiences with Infiniband, RDMA, CUDA, MPI, Slurm, Lustre, Singularity and related technologies will be central to this team's work. It will also be advantageous to have experience with Docker image design and operations, and public cloud image design and operations.
Location: This role will be based remotely in EMEA or the Americas regions
What your day will look like
- Write high quality, rigorously designed Python software
- Collaborate proactively with a globally distributed team
- Debug issues and produce high quality code to fix them
- Contribute to technical documentation that define best practices for authoring high quality operators

- You have a Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM or similar degree
