Description De L'emploi
Individual responsibilities:
- Identify the relevant length-scales and time-scales of the flow instabilities taking place in in-house liquid metal (LM) experiments.
- Make or buy suitable hardware and software to control instabilities. Demonstrate open loop stabilization.
- Build and improve space- and time-resolved diagnostics of LM thicknesses and flowrate (resistive, capacitive, etc.).
- Design, build and successfully test the closed-loop feedback system.
- Scale up sensing, actuating and feedback solutions from small demonstrators to large industrial facilities in harsh environments. Maximize Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Inspectability (RAMI).
Responsibilities as a team member
- Contribute to the experimental demonstration of stabilizing gravity-defying LM flows.
- Contribute to the scale-up of Renaissance Fusion’s integrated HTS-LM demonstrator to industry-relevant scales.
- Work with in-house material scientists and experimentalists to optimize the sensing and actuating electrodes, substrates, inlets, outlets, diagnostics ports and other parts in terms of wettability, resistance to corrosion, electric and thermal conductivity, flow perturbation etc.
Liquid Metal MHD Modeler

Description De L'emploi
Individual responsibilities:
- Numerical modelling of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows relevant to stellarator design such as duct and open-channel flows, particle transport, wall-bounded MHD turbulence subject to heat and/or mass transfers, magnetic field gradients etc.
- Provide expertise and critical analysis of numerical results to give insight on the relevant physical mechanisms at stake – Setup and sustain external collaborations with academic and/or industrial partners on computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) topics.
- Define technical solution to meet process engineer’s specifications.
Responsibilities as a team member
- Assist mechanical engineers and experimentalists in the design (geometry, flow regimes…) of stellarator parts and in-house experiments.

Description De L'emploi
We are looking for an experienced, world-class engineer, physicist or material-scientist to inspire and lead the Liquid Metal R&D Department. The department will initially consist of 7 scientists, engineers and technicians, and is expected to double in size within 3 years.
Responsibilities as a leader:
- Form and lead the liquid metal department. Present status: 1 position filled and 6 positions advertised, of which 2 in advanced interview stage.
- Doer/manager. Occasionally contribute to experiments and calculations. Regularly spark fruitful, objective-driven scientific discussions and contribute to them.
- Write overview research papers and deliver keynote talks at research conferences.
- Identify potential partners (suppliers, customers, academic collaborators etc.). Set up and cultivate collaborations. Maximize co-creation of value.
- Monitor, foster and inspire advancements by the liquid metal team. Coordinate and enable the on-time, on-budget, on-specs accomplishment of technical milestones, including but not limited to:
- Liquid Metal (LM) pumps.
- Closed loops, ducted.
- Full coverage of cylinder interiors with free-surface, flowing, gravity-defying thick LM. Extension to more complicated, larger surfaces.
- Feedback stabilization of LM instabilities.
- Control of multi-phase LM flows containing solid pebbles.

Internship: Electrochemical metal recovery from water treatment processes
Publié il y a 26 jours
Emploi consulté
Description De L'emploi
The water treatment sector produces tons of waste containing high amounts of metals, which ends up being disposed of without valorised routes. Water boards are therefore looking for efficient waste management solutions by encouraging resource recovery. What if it was possible to reduce the metal consumption in this industry?
Electrowinning is a method used in industries to obtain valuable metals such as copper, aluminium, and zinc in their refined form. However, the complexity of the waste streams from the water treatment sector hinders the application of the electrochemical processes. Therefore, more studies need to be carried. Are you ready to help with this?
Your goal
The goal of this internship is to define the optimal conditions for the electrowinning process of metallic cations. The assignment will comprise both a literature review and laboratory experiments. The combination of both will allow you to discover the different electrochemical mechanisms that lead to metal removal/recovery from water treatment subproducts.
Based on the literature review and your laboratory experiments you will propose which operational conditions promote an efficient metal recovery. Finally, an estimation of the operational costs will be made based on the experimental data. This allows you to compare electrowinning to other technologies and define its feasibility.
Who are you?
- Enrolled in a Dutch MSc Electrochemistry, Chemical or Environmental Engineering study.
- Available for an internship for a minimal period of 4 months.
- Flexible and independent.
- Curious and analytical.
- Professional command of the English language in words and writing.
Working for us means
- An internship allowance of € 350,- per month based on full-time employment.
- Possibility of a contract after your graduation.
- A buddy who will show you around in our organization.
- Reimbursement of travel expenses of €0.23 cents per km up to a maximum of 75 km if you live further than 10 km from our office and do not have an Ov-card.
- Learn from knowledgeable and dedicated people.
- Create impact and contribute to critical water challenges.
- Become part of an inclusive and collaborative culture.
- Contribute to sustainability.
